Darlington is a vibrant market town, with a strong railway history and industrial heritage. Though small in number, the Public Health team leads the council efforts to improve the health of the population of Darlington.
Their work spans everything from ensuring access to health visitors through to supporting people to quit smoking to healthy ageing and tackling health inequalities.

“I would absolutely recommend Insights. If you're committed to helping your team work as effectively as they can, this gives you the understanding to get there."
“We want to harness the brilliant things that people bring to the table. Harness those strengths and create an effective and collaborative team.”
The Darlington Council’s Public Health team is responsible for supporting community health, everything from stop smoking support, to healthy ageing and addressing substance addiction.
A talented team working in a resource-constrained environment, the Council partnered with Insights to strengthen team effectiveness, improve communication and increase measurable collaboration.
Insights Discovering Team Effectiveness programme included two workshops to improve how the leadership team understands, communicates and works together.
Insights delivered a virtual workshop to introduce the Darlington team to Insights language of colour energies using the Insights Discovery Personal Profile.
The focus was on personality preferences around communication, decision-making and collaboration.
The session embedded a shared language for understanding personality differences and how to collaborate optimally.
A second in-person workshop focused on team effectiveness and collaboration, and the team examined its strengths, surfaced hidden challenges and identified opportunities for clarity and trust
Following the workshops, the team created an action plan to drive team effectiveness. Many leaders also plan to introduce new language, tools and behaviours to teams they manage, aiming to improve collaboration across the wider public health teams.
The team completed surveys before and after, and their responses highlight key shifts in how they see themselves and each other, including:
