UHN is the world's No.1 publicly-funded hospital. With ten sites and more than 20k team members, UHN consists of Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, The Michener Institute of Education at UHN and West Park Healthcare Centre.


We are in an age [where] we cannot be just doctors. We also have to be knowledgeable in finances, how to set up a health department, how to run a department, and have qualities of a leader.
Leadership training is recognized as a critical tool in global cancer control, particularly in low-resource settings where system-level challenges require innovative, locally driven solutions.
The Princess Margaret Global Oncology Leadership Development (GOLD) program empowers fellows interested in global oncology to tackle these challenges through accessible, interdisciplinary leadership training.
The uptake is significant: Approximately 165 clinical (most internationally trained and 53% women) Fellows across 47 countries train at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre annually.
The Princess Margaret Global Oncology Leadership Development Program aims to:

Foster transformative leadership skills and inspire the next generation of global oncology leaders to 'think big' in addressing the cancer challenges of the future

Introduce key concepts in global oncology and cancer control including cancer policy, the economics of cancer care, and research and innovation in cancer care

Build a global community of leaders in cancer care, connected through a strong alumni network

Provide mentorship opportunities to build strategic connections with current leaders in cancer care
The GOLD program consists of a series of lectures and interactive small group sessions with a focus on developing and strengthening cancer care leadership at a systems level.
Leveraging both Insights Discovery and Insights Self-Aware Leader programs, participants build a foundation of self-awareness, then expand that awareness to understanding other communication and decision-making preferences.
This training is particularly relevant for international Fellows at UHN who, on their return home, are responsible for growing cancer care systems. It's also relevant for domestic Fellows with an interest in health systems leadership.
Since its inception in 2019, GOLD has included facilitated Insights sessions and pre-and post-sessions alongside networking events and mentorship.
The impact of the GOLD program, which leverages Insights Discovery and Self-Aware Leader, was published in the JCO Global Oncology (An American Society of Clinical Oncology Journal) in 2026.
The study illustrates the impact of structured and inclusive leadership development on enhancing confidence across multiple leadership domains.
Fellows reported improvements across 24 leadership competencies including communication, systems thinking, team management and self-awareness.
